Those USO Heroes

My husband left for Vietnam in mid-December, and when the Bob Hope Special USO program came on our little TV set, I hadn’t yet heard from my husband. He could be there!  I scanned the hundreds and hundreds of military uniforms—  searching for his smile, hoping to hear his laugh one more time.  I had no idea where he was stationed, but maybe he was having some fun before his war would begin.  I was wrong.  He was already in the field, “humpin’ trails,” to find the elusive enemy, no where near concerts, music, Bob Hope jokes or Ann Margaret’s generous gift of music and beauty.
